Heavyness outta Australia Day

Jan 26, 2012 By okar in Music No Comments Tags: 1971, Australia Day, Choice Cuts, doom, early proto metal, Easy to Lie, The Masters Apprentices

Here is one of my favorite Australian bands with a heavy song in very much the spirit of Sabbath and other early proto metal bands.
The Masters Apprentices was a band formed in Adelaide in 1966 and unless you’re into the early rock psychedelia, these guys have probably missed your radar.

The song is “Easy to Lie” from the album Choice Cuts, 1971. Happy Australia Day mates…

Manly is going to be CROWDED!!!

Manly is going to be CROWDED!!!

In less than 3 weeks the ocean, streets and spaces in Manly below our office will be invaded by the Hurley/Billabong Australian Open or Surfing. The last days have been blessed with great surf and it looks like we will have yet another week of good E swells. I can only hope that the comp gets at least one swell passing through so that the best surfers in the world get to showcase their skills.

As far as crowds go, Manly will turn into a circus even more so than what the regular visiting surfers and tourists do… but I think that we will get to see some epic action. With en masse events comes both the good, the bad and the ugly. Can’t wait!

Check out the official site here and prepare to see more updates here at Flower Hell as the event unfold

More awesome people…

Starting the week with yet another ‘People are Awesome’ film… but believe me, it is worth watching. The clips here are better quality, more interesting angles and the music much more in line with what I’d want for a soundtrack to these insane dare devils. Most clips seem genuine too.

Etta James has passed on…

One of the great R&B and deep soul voices passed away yesterday 73 years of age. Listen to the tune and send a thought for Etta James.

Space matters

This piece in his series ‘Space Matters’ by Turkish artist Mehmet Ali Uysal is a fresh example of reshaping the space around us I think.

As promised… here is a look at Jason Salsa Salisbury’s first surf on the finless board that Deus made.

Deus finless surfcraft

The end of the 60′s was maybe THE most interesting of times in surf history if you ask me. Personality, innovation and style were among the things that sparked the transition in board designs.

I found this board from Deus the other day and it instantly caught my attention and put a smile on my face.
In the last few years we have seen a bit of comeback of that psychedelic progression. Inspired by Derek Hynd and his finless surfing, this board shaped by the creative people in the Deus temple of Bali is nothing short of inspiration from fangtails, wingers, channels etc. that we saw back in the days.

Soon to come Jason ‘Salsa’ Salisbury surfs the finless beauty for the first time.

Thunder and lightning

Thunder and lightning

The past couple of weeks have been a showcase of moody weathers outside our office in Manly. In an attempt to break away a bit of only posting videos, I am going to start a somewhat of my photography portfolio from the skies.

First off with thunder and lightning because lately we have been seeing some brutal light shows both out to sea and around town. A few times I actually caught the bolts hit hard just blocks away from our house. Voila!

Heaviest footage ever

Jan 13, 2012 By okar in Photography, Surf No Comments Tags: biggest ever, Billabong Pro, Chris Bryan, crazyness, hell men, insane, moster barrels, phantom camera, photographer, Surf, Tahiti, Teahupoo

I have to admit that no few seconds that I have ever seen filmed before is this heavy. Really groundbreaking footage yet again from Teahupoo. I don’t even have words for how dedicated these “hell men” are that let these monsters move em down and swallow them whole.
